The sports division of AIU (Association of Indian Universities) functions as the Inter University Sports Board for the promotion of competitive sports in the university sector. In university education, sports plays an important role in the development of integrated personality of the youth including – body, mind and spirit. Accordingly, active participation of University students in competitive sports generates a spirit of healthy competition in daily life too.
With this vision, every year AIU organizes National University Games in collaboration with member Universities for participation of University teams/contingent in National and International Championships. Only those universities having membership of AIU can participate in the National University Games.
Chandigarh University Mohali,Punjab has been entrusted by AIU to organize the All India Inter University Boxing (M & W) Championship 2023-24. The competition took place from 20th December, 2023 to 5th January 2024 in the Chandigarh University Campus in Mohali,Punjab.
Participation and Performance
In this competition, a total of 182 Universities, combining both men and women categories, had their teams participate. The total number of participants was approximately 5000. Each men’s as well as women’s University team consisted of 13 Boxers representing different weight categories in the event.The competition was conducted between two zones North East Zone(Men) and South West Zone(Men and Women) and then the qualified boxers were meant to participate in the All India Inter University (Men).
Participants and Venue
RKMVERI (Belur Math)has a vibrant Sports Science and Yoga Department. The Department sent two Men for the competition. They participated in the men’s South West Zone . The participants were Bir Chandan Munda from MSc (Sports science) 2023-25 batch, and Hari Vishnu Msc (Sports Science) 2022-24 batch. They combined with the RKMVERI(Coimbatore) to form a single team along with boxers from the Coimbatore campus.
Weight Categories
- Hari Vishnu: 67-71kg
Hari Vishnu reached the quarterfinals by winning two of his bouts and was eliminated at his third bout - Bir Chandan Munda: 71-75 kg
Bir Chandan Munda lost his second bout
Result
Both players were unable to qualify for All india inter University, but they fought vigilantly and gave their best effort.
Conclusion
Keeping Swami Vivekananda’s words in mind and echoing AIU’s vision, we are sure that our students have gained a very valuable experience with this participation and thereby, we are committed to motivate our students to regularly participate in this type of championship in the future.
