Sports, at both competitive and recreational levels, are gaining popularity in the society. Sports industry is one of the major employment provider all over the world. There is more than hundred sports management and other sports products related companies in India. Moreover, each team in competitive sports requires a team of sports science specialists and medical doctors. In India, only a handful of experts are available in sports science field creating a huge gap between demand and supply for future needs.
In academic perspective, Sports Science is fast emerging as an independent interdisciplinary area in Higher Education. It incorporates traditionally the broader areas of physiology, biomechanics, biochemistry, psychology, anatomy and sports education, occupational and environmental health. Present day developments in the discipline of Sports Science involve knowledge from different fields like mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science and related subjects, besides subsuming areas like exercise physiology, mobility science, etc. Computer simulation techniques are also becoming ubiquitous in the study and understanding of how the human body reacts to exercise and training under different environmental conditions and form the basis of extraordinary performances in competitive sports, making the demand for trained specialists in the emerging discipline of Sports Science constantly on the rise all over the world.
The Department of Sports Science and Yoga at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute is involved in teaching and research in the field of sports science for the last four years. Faculty members of the department are also actively involved in various activities for improving performance of sports persons through outreach programmes. The present course offers to create multidisciplinary knowledge base among the students that would enable them to enter research and real life applications in variety of sports and games.
Aim of research related to sports science
- To understand the mechanism of physical and physiological adaptations to sports training and physical activity.
- To Explore the possibility of inclusion of disabled persons in all types of sporting activity and design new sporting activities.
