The Department of Sports and Yoga of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math, observed the International Day of Yoga 2025 with great enthusiasm and spirit on 21st June 2025, in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. The event was a reflection of the university’s continuous commitment to promoting the ancient Indian practice of Yoga as a way to maintain physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The celebration took place in the morning hours at the Belur Math campus, in a peaceful and vibrant atmosphere filled with energy and discipline. This year’s program witnessed the participation of around 250 individuals including RKMVERI students, faculty, staff members, and Yoga enthusiasts from nearby centers. Participants came from various age groups and educational backgrounds, ranging from school-level students to postgraduates, showcasing the universal appeal and relevance of Yoga. The event began with the practice of the Common Yoga Protocol, a standardized set of asanas and breathing practices recommended by the Ministry of AYUSH for the International Day of Yoga. The session was led with precision and clarity by the students of the Department of Sports and Yoga, who have been trained in Yoga teaching and demonstration. Their confident and inspiring performance created a supportive atmosphere, helping even the beginners to follow the steps easily and mindfully. The celebration was further enriched by the collaborative participation of organizations such as India Tourism Kolkata, Nehru Yuva Kendra, and Mera Yuva Bharat. These partnerships helped extend the reach of the program and encouraged youth participation in large numbers. Their involvement also strengthened the message of national unity and cultural pride through the medium of Yoga. At the conclusion of the CYP session, the gathering was addressed by Swami Atmapriyanandaji Maharaj, the Pro-Chancellor of RKMVERI and Secretary of University Centre, who is an erudite senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order. In his motivational address, Swamiji highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline in daily life and how Yoga plays a crucial role in achieving this. Quoting inspiring episodes from the life of Swami Vivekananda, he urged everyone to embrace Yoga not just as a one-day event, but as a daily lifestyle practice that nurtures holistic well-being. Following this, Swami Shastravidyananda, the Controller of Examinations of RKMVERI also shared his thoughts. He emphasized that Yoga should not be misunderstood as only a physical exercise, rather it is a harmonious blend of physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, aimed at uniting the body, mind, and soul. His words helped deepen the understanding of Yoga among the participants, especially the younger generation. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Swami Vidyapradananda, the Coordinator of the Department of Sports and Yoga. He expressed gratitude to all the participants, collaborators, and volunteers whose enthusiastic involvement made the event a grand success. He also acknowledged the ongoing support of the university leadership and the Ministry of AYUSH in promoting Yoga education and awareness. The celebration of IDY 2025 at RKMVERI was not just an event, but a reaffirmation of the university’s vision of holistic education inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s ideals. It successfully conveyed the deeper message of Yoga as a way of life, rooted in self-discipline, inner peace, and spiritual upliftment. In conclusion, the event served its purpose of spreading awareness about the physical and mental benefits of Yoga, fostering unity among participants of diverse backgrounds, and reinforcing the commitment to incorporate Yoga as a regular part of life. The Department of Sports and Yoga looks forward to continuing such meaningful initiatives in the future, with the same spirit and sincerity.
