Academics – Yoga Programmes

The Department of Sports Science and Yoga currently offers the following degree and certificate programmes in the subject of Yoga

1. MSc in Yoga (2 years Full-time course)

The objective and goal of this course is to impart higher education in Yoga (beyond Diploma level) and create a pool of dedicated students who will proceed towards  PhD and research. The two-year full time Masters in Yoga program is a unique blend of study of Yogic texts and modern scientific disciplines related to Yoga. Equal importance is given to ancient texts and moderns science, both theory and practical. Students from Science background can complement their knowledge of science  with the knowledge of Sanskrit and Yogic texts, while students of Humanities background will gain knowledge of scientific subjects that are closely related to Yoga.

Objectives of the course

  1. Promoting higher education in Yoga
  2. Integral approach to Yoga as a holistic Science
  3. Imparting skills for enabling students to take up research in Yoga

Session starts in first week of July every year.

Eligibility:

  • B.Sc Yoga / B.Sc. Yoga Therapy / B.Sc. Yoga and Naturopathy (full time, regular mode) from a recognised University with minimum 50% marks in aggregate.(45% for reserve category)

2. PG Diploma in Yoga (PGDY, 1 year Full time Course)

The objective and goal of the course is to create manpower to help social transformation by creating awareness about Yoga practices and its usefulness in reduction of stress and physical ailments. The students undergoing this course would be able to teach Yoga in schools, colleges and to the population. Specific objectives of the course are given below.

Objectives of the course

  1. Promoting positive health, prevention of stress related health problems and rehabilitation through Yoga.
  2. Integral approach of Yoga to common ailments.
  3. Imparting skills for introducing : Yoga for health to general public, and Yoga for total personality development of students in Colleges and Universities.
  4. Invoke scientific attitude and team spirit to channelize their energies in to creative and constructive endeavors.
  5. To enable them to establish Yoga training centers in the service of society at large.

Eligibility: Graduate in any subject (including B.P.T & B.P.Ed.) with minimum 50% marks from any recognised University.

3. Certificate Course in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCYN)

(6 months  course, classes held in weekends)

Yoga is a science of Holistic Living, it is becoming popular day by day. In order to make Yoga education accessible to a large population the CCYN course has been developed. It is tailor made for working class who could not attend the regular full time courses.

In this program, students will be taught the basic concepts of the philosophy of Yoga, the physiological implications of Yoga as well as various Yogic practices such as Asanas , Bandha, Mudra, Neti, Dhauti and Pranayama. This programme aims to increase awareness on Yoga and teach general public wellness through Yoga.

4. PhD in Yoga

The Department of Sports Science and Yoga conducts scientific research on the physiological and psychological changes due to yogic practices and their applications in human performance, cognitive neuroscience, tolerance to hazardous environment and areas related to alleviation of human suffering to enhance quality of life.

PhD program highlights

The PhD Yoga program is currently available for full-time regular students only

  1. Duration: The duration of PhD program is 3 – 5 yrs normally.
  2. Coursework (one/two semesters)
    • 1st semester — Compulsory coursework (12 credits): Research Methodology & Statistics (4 credits),  Research Ethics and Publication (2 credits), Special paper /Seminar (3-6 credits),
    • 2nd semester — Additional coursework on advanced topics may be required to be taken based based on the recommendation of Doctoral committee.
  3. Research work:
    • Doctoral committee : A doctoral committee of at least three internal faculty and one external faculty will be formed for each candidate at the end of successful completion of compulsory coursework.
    • PhD registration: On the guidance of the committee the student will prepare a synopsis of proposed research and make presentation of the same for registration as a PhD candidate
    • Bi-annual progress report: Each candidate is required to make presentation of the progress of his research work every six months after the PhD registration
    • Academic service: JRF candidates are required to do compulsory service in the Department’s academic affairs as per ‘UGC Guidelines For Junior Research Fellowship In Sciences, Humanities And Social Sciences’
    • Conversion to SRF: JRF candidates are required to submit research progress and make a presentation at the end of 2yrs in order to be converted to SRF status.
